TV signers go nude!
Written by slum
We have some really good signers on television - there's one on CBeebies who really gets into the fun of it all - but it would make things a touch more interesting if we did what this Japanese station is doing. The Sun Though we'd have to ask do the girls get to see some bloke with kit off? That would be fair, would it not?  Can you imagine watching Hollyoaks on Sunday - talk about distractions!!

Just been on YouTube
Written by slum
Read (I think it was John's post earlier) about the fallout at Deaf UK and there are some replies on there.   Check this: Deaf UK reply  Though I quite like this one - why are deaf organisations crumbling... Another YouTube video I think the point of deafies.co.uk is that it's run by the people who use it. Which is how these online communities should be. Anyone steps out of line then report them. Mind you it would be great if deafies ran videos like those on youtube. it would be excellent!!

Great Daily Mail story
Written by slum
Read this great story in the Daily Mail. Did anyone else see it? Basically it's called 'So why won't the NHS listen to deaf patients?' and details the misery some deaf people are facing waiting for aids and such like.  This is the link: Daily Mail

Letter to Deaf UK
Written by John
Youtube Deaf UK video Rough translation: "OK. Right. Letter to members of Deaf UK. The reason I'm emailing ... I'm concerned over recent emails among Deaf UK members ... ah, well, yeah ... anyway, I'm concerned about the moderating, how recent actions have been conducted by Deaf UK moderators. Deaf UK was set up on 28 June 1998 by (fingerspells) John Savvers (sign name: "saver") The group was unmoderated at that time. Late autumn 1998 (fingerspells) Alison Bryan became a moderator with John Savvers. Other moderators who joined after are (fingerspells) Jen Dodds (sign name: spiky hair) and Allison Alison Hicking(?). Deaf UK was set up a forum where Deaf people who can discuss among themselves in "Deaf space" of their own. But there's only one moderator. I have three points to make: 1) Alison, Jen, Joseph and Tony all have been recently banned from Deaf UK without members' approval. The moderator decided by himself to ban them. Considering the past (of Deaf UK), only one member has been banned from Deaf UK. The decision to ban (this member) was made by poll. It was all poll, poll, poll. It seems that in 8 years, only one member was banned. Yet last two weeks alone, *four* members got banned. Actually, two of them are former moderators. So, I'm concerned about the fairness in the process of decision-making (e.g. it's not democratic). 2) I truly understand and empathise how massive the responsibility is for one moderator to run a list for a group of 2,594 members. However I'm concerned that the current moderator can't seem to maintain his sense of boundaries and ethics. So, I would like to propose that if you have a grievance, it should be taken outside Deaf UK. Grievances should not to be discussed in Deaf UK. Deaf UK should also have *two* moderators. The current situation means a lot of members are apprehensive about posting emails and the possibility of getting a ban. Deaf UK members have made repeated requests for a poll to determine whether the group should be moderated or not, but the current moderator has refused. I'd like to point out that Section 19 of the Deaf UK Policy states that: a Deaf UK moderator's role is to ensure all discussions are appropriate and in accordance (with Deaf UK policy and rules), and to be a point of referral. It's not intended for moderators to act as a (fingerspells) nanny to this group. No. There's been no consultation nor discussion with members, which means there is only one way, the most democratic way. That's to set up a poll, which allows for (future) grievances to be cast aside. I suggest we should have polls on two issues: First one, Moderation: Should Deaf UK should be moderated or not to be moderated? Second one, Banned members Alison, Jen, Joseph and Tony should all be reinstated as Deaf UK members. If the moderator feels suspicious and doesn't want them to return, then he should provide a full explanation why the ban on them should remain. At least this would allow all members to debate. This second poll can determine a) Alison, Jen, Joseph and Tony to remain banned; and b) Alison, Jen, Joseph and Tony to remain as Deaf UK members with full privileges the membership entails. I'd like the moderator to consider my request and to have these polls set up. It must have a deadline established for members to respond and also to allow members to discuss within the group. Thank you. [End of rough translation] Hope this helps. driftaway3 from YouTube
